Did you know we offer MRI services at two convenient locations? It can often be done within the same week as your appointment. This guide is designed to help you get an MRI at our facilities, and what to expect at your appointments.
At your current appointment, your doctor may order an MRI. An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a scan that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed pictures of the inside of your body, helping surgeons see exactly where a problem is and plan or guide surgery more safely and accurately.
This order is reviewed by our insurance authorization team. From there, you receive a call from our team to schedule an appointment. You will select your preferred date, time, and location.
MRI Clinic in Alamo Heights
Our Alamo Heights location at 430 West Sunset Road services all conditions and body areas. This machine has a stronger magnetic field, which yields clearer images in a shorter amount of time.

Saturdays 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
MRI Clinic in the Medical Center (21 Spurs Lane)
Our Spurs Lane location at 21 Spurs Lane is a smaller unit designed to scan small areas, such as foot, ankle, or knees. It is an open MRI unit and good if you have fear of tight spaces.

FAQs
What do I need to bring to the appointment?
Remember to bring your payment method of choice to cover cost of the exam; comfortable clothing free from metal buttons or zippers; and if unable to bring metal-free clothing, disposable shorts or gown will be provided.
What do I need to leave at home?
Jewelry of any kind, bracelets, rings, watches, necklaces, piercings; and bulky or expensive belongings that would not fit in a locker, such as book bags or duffle bags.
How early do I need to arrive to my appointment?
Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment to account for screening and changing.
What to expect upon your arrival
Check in at the front desk. Here you will present your insurance information and provide any payments due. You'll be called back for screening and to change, as required. You may be asked to wait in chairs outside the MRI suite until the MRI team is ready to take you back.
Your scan will be performed. You will be asked to lie on the table. MRI machines can be noisy, so hearing protection will be provided. If at any point during the scan, you feel discomfort or distress, you can alert the Technologist by squeezing the rubber ball given to you at the start of the scan.
Your MRI scan will take 20 to 40 minutes based on the body part being scanned, and whether there is any metal present in the area of interest, or in the case of a joint replacement or surgical repair.
When complete, you'll change, grab belongings from the locker. Return to the front desk, where you will make any final payments, schedule follow up appointments, and check out. Results will be sent to your doctor and they will contact you.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Remember these tips: No jewelry or metal objects. If taking medication for claustrophobia, do that as prescribed. Bring implant device card. Your head may be inside the unit for most exams.
