ABOUT
Andrew L. Whaley, MD, a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon, specializes in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), trauma, sports medicine and adult joint reconstruction (replacement) involving the shoulder, hip and knee. Dr. Whaley, who is specialty trained for sports medicine injuries, has a distinct certification in this area called the Subspecialty Certification in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). This area of expertise includes repair of torn tendons or muscles, ligament reconstruction around joints as well as arthroscopy of the joints. Reconstructive orthopaedic surgery focuses on the surgical reconstruction of the musculoskeletal system, or bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and related structures.
In Adult Reconstruction, Dr. Whaley performs both partial and total knee replacement, total hip replacement and shoulder replacement. Part of Dr. Whaley’s practice particularly emphasizes minimally invasive and tissue sparing surgery, and the practice is unique as it does not surcharge for these procedures. Dr. Whaley provides care, both operative and non-operative, for trauma of the extremities-the arms and legs. Dr Whaley is proud to provide a level of care and empathy that treats all patients as family. Dr. Whaley takes his time to teach and explain in easily understandable terms your orthopaedic issue and the treatment options. Andrew L. Whaley, MD is highly qualified to take care of your injuries and orthopaedic conditions from beginning to end.
Although Dr. Whaley was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, he has many family ties to San Antonio. His lineage in orthopedic surgery dates back to 1947 when his grandfather, John J. Hinchey, M.D., was one of the first orthopedically trained surgeons to serve South Texas from right here in San Antonio. Dr. Whaley strives for the standard of care that his heritage demands.
After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas A&M University, Dr. Whaley went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center of San Antonio. He followed this with his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The Mayo Clinic’s Orthopaedic Program was rated #1 by US News and World Report during Dr. Whaley‘s five years of training and it continues to be ranked at the top of the high performing hospitals on this prestigious list. Following this training at Mayo Clinic, another year was then spent by Dr. Whaley focusing solely on sports medicine at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. Since completing his training in 2003, Dr. Whaley has been in practice in San Antonio. Dr. Whaley has served in leadership roles as both Medical Director and Chief of Staff at various locations.
