RETURN TO PLAY AFTER COVID-19

DUE TO THE UNFORESEEN PANDEMIC CAUSED BY THE CORONAVIRUS DISEASE (COVID-19), CROWDS WERE QUICKLY DISPERSED TO REDUCE VIRAL SPREAD. WITH THE CROWDS WENT THE ATHLETES AND OUR FAVORITE SPORTS’ SEASONS. .

As we return to normal, athletes are welcomed back to their playing grounds a year later. While we are ready to cheer on our favorite players, they must, first, prepare their bodies for the upcoming battles

Research shows many patients experience residual symptoms of the coronavirus disease after the period of illness. Alongside general symptoms, patients can develop secondary illnesses due to the initial sickness especially those related to lung damage as the coronavirus can greatly affect the respiratory system. Such illnesses like pneumonia and, in the most severe cases, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). For those, and many reasons, an athlete’s return to play must be gradual and reintroduction to the sport must start lightly.

Dr. Young talks about an athlete’s journey as he returns to play after COVID-19.

After a known diagnosis, all authorities recommend a phased in approach to return to exercise and return to play. Most educational institutions actually have protocols for that!

It starts with light exercise graduating gradually to full contact or full exercise. The reason for that is to establish a little bit of challenge to the cardiovascular system. If there's a problem, we can pick it up during the lighter portion of the reintroduction.

If you have any questions or concerns please consult with your primary care physician.
